Expressive Arts and Design
In EAD this half-term, the Rockets have been focusing on ‘flowers’ through drawing and mark making. We have been exploring real flowers using our senses and made choices using our communication strategies. We have then used a range of tools and techniques to create our very own flowers, such as pencils, paintbrushes and spikey balls. Next half-term our story is ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’. We will be experiencing the story through natural materials and identifying different parts of the story within our literacy sessions.
In Understanding The World, Science we will be looking at animals and plants, growing our own flowers and responding to changes in the environment.
At home, you could create your very own bear hunt using grass, water and soil. You could also go on a walk in your local park to look at different plants and see if you can spot any animals.

Physical Development
In Meteors, this half-term we have been learning about line dancing in Physical Development. We have really enjoyed learning new moves, songs and routines and have shown great skills in learning to copy and independently perform dance moves to some fabulous line dancing songs. We have been learning the moves of Cha Cha Slide and YMCA and have even shown these off to our peers in our PE performances! Well done Meteors for such great work.
Next half-term we will be developing our knowledge and skills in dance to learn about cultural dances such as the Māori Haka and the Hawaiian Hula.

Writing
In Lower Galaxies, we have been learning all about where food comes from! This includes milking the cow at the farm and finding the berries in rural areas!
In Upper Galaxies, we have been learning and comparing the amazon river to the river thames! This has been lots of fun, especially when we have been fishing for different animals found in each river.

Communication, Language & Literacy
Lower Primary students enjoyed reading and listening to Stuck by Oliver Jeffers. Lower Primary Comets especially loved exploring the story, noticing all the different objects that become stuck in the tree, and using symbols to communicate and explain what is happening throughout the story. As well as enjoying their literacy story, they have been working really hard on developing their writing skills, demonstrating fantastic precision and control in their work.
Upper Primary Comets enjoyed reading and listening to A Dot in the Snow by Corrinne Averiss. They took part in an immersive experience, travelling to the Arctic and exploring and engaging with all things white and cold. Upper Primary Comets also developed their comprehension skills by using descriptive words to describe the two main characters in the story. As well as enjoying travelling to the Arctic, they have been working really hard on their writing skills, which include making sentences and working on letter formation.
Next term in Expressive Arts & Design, our focus will be Music. Both Upper and Lower Comets will be exploring songs from films, listening carefully to different beats and rhythms, and practising how to copy them using their hands or simple instruments.
At home, we’d love for children to watch their favourite Disney film and listen out for the different songs throughout the movie. They can then have fun recreating their favourite song using everyday household items such as pots, pans, or spoons. Can you see if your child wants to perform with a family member or a friend? We can’t wait to see and hear their fantastic performances, so please send your class teacher some photos or videos!

This half-term our attendance has been 88.81%. Our aim is to be at 91% for the whole school, so we have some work to do.
The main reason for absences this half-term and last half has been illness. There have been a lot of viruses affecting attendance. We have been working hard in school on hand hygiene and encouraging children to wash their hands as thoroughly as possible. In the Autumn Term, the Special School Nursing Team did a handwashing workshop with all of our staff members. The nurses used a black light to show exactly where the unseen areas on the hands are that can pick up bacteria and how to wash them properly.

Pathway Attendance for Spring 1:
Rockets: 89.83%
Meteors: 93.22%
Galaxies: 66.48%
Comets: 93.3%
Astronauts: 89.17%

Hello, I am a new Assistant Headteacher here at Delius having joined in September. I bring lots of experience from other SEND settings in Bradford, Liverpool and South Africa. I have always loved working with children with special educational needs from my early career as a teenager coaching gymnastics, to working at a primary school in Johannesburg, to now working with our children here at Delius.
|
|
Within my role at Delius I am class teacher for Class 8 and when I am not working in class, I am responsible for developing teaching and learning in Literacy and Phonics and oversee Behaviour and Sensory Integration across the school. I am really interested in how children learn and develop and enjoy looking deeper into situations to try and find solutions.
When I am not working hard at school, I love walking her dog Nova and spending time having fun with my family and friends. I am a very proud auntie to 3 nieces and nephews who I love to spend time with. In school holidays you will usually find me going out to eat lots of delicious food! I also really enjoy exploring new places and learning more about other cultures and traditions of different places in the world.
Chelsie - Assistant Headteacher/Teacher

At Delius, both staff and children are excited to embrace Makaton through engaging initiatives like a Makaton lunch club for staff, a signing choir that helps children learn through music, outreach and formal courses for parents. Delius are very lucky to have 2 in house Makaton tutors , Sarah Kelly who is a local Makaton tutor and Stacey Hamilton who is a Regional Makaton tutor. Stacey has also recently competed her Safeguarding train the trainer course
Makaton Myth-busters
Myth #1 -
Myth- My child won't be interested in learning Makaton
Fact - Children are used to copying actions, such as in nursery rhymes and are often quick to learn.
Myth #2
Myth - You need formal training to use it
Fact - While excellent for early communication, Makaton supports anyone with communication challenges, from young children to adults, and is used in mainstream settings to help all children develop communication, language, and literacy
Introducing Core Word of the Week:
As part of the total communication approach used at Delius we are introducing core word of the week. Stacey or Sarah demonstrates what the core word of the week is in Makaton on our daily staff briefing
Our core words of the week this term have been
Drink
Eat
Lunch
Home
Toilet
Check out our facebook weekly for a new core word.
Makaton Course for Parents
Over the last year Stacey and Sarah have trained 2 sets of parents,We are hoping to put some of the parents who have already completed their level 1 and 2 through their level 3 and eventually level 4.
During our November training day Stacey trained a group of Delius Staff in the Makaton Level 2 , to further expand their Makaton vocab . Stacey has also been involved in training staff from other Co-op academies schools and has recently finished level 4 with staff from Co-op academy Parkland and Co-op Academy Leeds. This year she will be completing 1-4 with more Co-op academy staff.
