We took to the stage at St George’s Hall for the annual Musica Spectacular alongside other schools in Bradford!
Pupils from Co-op Academy Delius and Co-op Academy Southfield came together to form an incredible, large-scale signing choir. The group performed a moving rendition of "When I Grow Up" from the musical Matilda, a song that captures the wonder and big dreams we hold for the future.
It was a beautiful full-circle moment for our community; the choir featured a huge range of ages, from our littlest performers in EYFS to older Southfield students who actually began their journey at Delius years ago!
Our dancers at Co-op Academy Delius absolutely sparkled in their ballet performance of "One Short Day" from Wicked! This year we’ve been working with the incredible Martin Howland from Project Resurgence, to show that ballet is for everybody! A huge shout-out to our two soloists who kicked things off by singing the intro through their headpiece mics and to everyone who took to the stage - you were amazing!

Communication, Language & Literacy
In CLL this half term we have been looking at the story ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’. We have been experiencing the story through exploration of natural materials and have identified different parts of the story within our literacy sessions. We have been immersed into the bear hunt within different areas in school such as the immersive room and sensory room. Next half term our topic will be ‘What can we find on the farm?’. We will be looking at the story ‘A squash and a squeeze’ and will be exploring different parts of a farm including animals, barns and textures. At home you could sing nursery rhymes linked to the farm such as ‘Old Macdonald’. You could listen to and copy different farm animal sounds, or even go to your local farm to hunt for the animals.

Maths
This half term Meteors have had lots of fun learning about money. We have been exploring different coins, learning about the process of exchanging and had lots of lovely sensory experiences linking to money. Some of us have even gone on a school trip to practice using money in real life situations. We have enjoyed lots of exciting activities in different spaces around school such as playing coin hide and seek in our Gamalan and getting to pay for our favourite fidgets and toys in class.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
Lower Primary
This term, the Lower Primary Comets have thoroughly enjoyed their PSED lessons, focusing on recognising safe and unsafe situations, including important road safety skills such as crossing the road safely and remembering to look both ways. Lower Primary had a wonderful opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom by putting these road safety skills into practice and demonstrating their understanding. Lower Primary Comets have also been exploring the Comets classrooms and corridors, carefully observing their surroundings to identify items and equipment that are safe or potentially unsafe. This topic has encouraged the children to think critically about safety in all environments while developing their awareness and independence.
Upper Primary
This term, the Upper Primary Comets have been busy whilst engaging in their PSED lessons. They have been learning about private body parts using the correct and respectful vocabulary, as well as developing their understanding of private spaces and the importance of respecting other people’s privacy and personal boundaries. To support their learning, Upper Primary enjoyed listening to “Pantararus” by the NSPCC, a fun and child-friendly song that introduces the PANTS rule. They have also been learning about Online Safety, where they have been making posters and creating their own Online Safety Rules to keep themselves safe.

Understanding the World
Upper Primary
Through our Understanding the World sessions, we have had opportunities to develop our geographical and scientific skills this term. Upper Primary has been learning to identify rivers on a map. They have also developed their knowledge of rivers by learning some of the key terminology such as mouth and river bed. In Science they have worked hard to identify the differences between living and non living things using venn diagrams. They have also been placing the life cycle of a human and exploring what we need to exist. Moving into the summer term, our Upper Primary pupils will be identifying and naming a range of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores in Science and in Geography will be exploring geographical similarities and differences of Urban Bradford and Rural Western Africa Savannah.
Lower Primary
Our Lower Primary pupils have been learning about field to fork in Geography. They have explored the features of a farm and the journey our food goes on before it ends up on our plates. In Science they have been categorising animals and plants dependent on their features and sorting animals into 5 main groups: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. As we move into the final academic term, in Science our Lower Primary cohort will be sorting materials in Science and in Geography will be exploring the different types of weather and what causes it.

At home you could sing nursery rhymes linked to the farm such as ‘Old Macdonald’. You could listen to and copy different farm animal sounds, or even go to your local farm to hunt for the animals.
Lower Primary
Can you go for a walk with family and show the Road Safety Rules by holding hands with an adult, looking before crossing the road or waiting for the green light to go.
Upper Primary
Can the children go on their iPads or computers and show you there favourite game? Can they turn take with you whilst doing this?
Upper Primary: Draw a picture of a river. Show where the river starts and where it ends. You can add labels or talk about your picture with an adult.
Lower Primary: Choose one food you like. Draw a picture of where it comes from and how it gets to your plate. You can explain your picture to an adult.
When we return our lower Galaxies will be learning about weight in maths and our upper Galaxies will be learning about shapes! Can you go on a nature walker and see what you can find as the world begins to get ready for summer! Can you find a flower and notice it feels lighter than a stick? Can you find a round stone and compare that to the points on a leaf? Do you show clear preference between both stimuli, using all your senses to explore them! Remember to take photos and share with your class teacher!
Next half term we will be learning about Time. You can support this learning at home by joining in some time related activities such as exploring countdown clocks, signing rhymes such as hickory dickory dock and playing what time is it Mr Wolf? You could also use a timer to see how long you can engage in your favourite activities.

There has been a rise in pupils struggling to attend school due to issues with their teeth this term. This is a problem for lots of reasons - usually sensory reasons or a fear of going to the dentist office.
If you do not have a dentist but your child does have an EHCP, they are able to access a community dentist - here are the details for who to contact: https://www.bdct.nhs.uk/our-services/community-health-services/community-dental-service/

My name is Fran Copping and I am a Speech and Language Therapist supporting the communication and interaction needs of Delius academy. I work with Delius two days a week (Wednesday and Thursday).
I have worked in special schools for 18 years and have a brother with Down Syndrome and complex needs. I have practiced as a Speech and Language Therapist for 5 years, and I am extremely passionate about giving every child a voice, whatever that looks like!
|
|
At Delius I am working hard to support staff’s understanding and confidence in creating communication opportunities and adopting a Total Communication mindset. I strongly believe in the Total Communication approach, which ensures that all forms of communication are honored and respected.
Since September, along with Beth Adams (the Communication and Interaction lead in school) we have been very busy! We have successfully implemented Widgit symbols in school, trained staff on using core boards to support all the different reasons pupils might communicate across the day and introduced the use of the high tech AAC app TD Snap to provide pupils with another way to express themselves.
I have a busy training calendar ahead with staff across school, including areas such as Gestalt Language Processing, Neurodiversity affirming practice and Intensive Interaction. In addition to this, I am also joining existing parent coffee mornings to chat with parents and support the successful implementation of communication strategies at home.
If you see me around please come and have a chat with me! I really enjoy engaging with families around school.
Fran Copping,
Speech and Language Therapist

At Delius, both staff and children are excited to embrace Makaton through engaging initiatives like a Makaton lunch club for staff, a signing choir that helps children learn through music, outreach and formal courses for parents. Delius are very lucky to have 2 in house Makaton tutors , Sarah Kelly and Stacey Hamilton . Stacey has also recently competed her Safeguarding train the trainer course
Makaton Myth-busters
Myth #1 -
Myth- My child won't be interested in learning Makaton
Fact - Children are used to copying actions, such as in nursery rhymes and are often quick to learn.
Myth #2
Myth - You need formal training to use it
Fact - While excellent for early communication, Makaton supports anyone with communication challenges, from young children to adults, and is used in mainstream settings to help all children develop communication, language, and literacy
Introducing Core Word of the Week:
As part of the total communication approach used at Delius we are introducing core word of the week. Stacey or Sarah demonstrates what the core word of the week is in Makaton on our daily staff briefing
Our core words of the week this term have been
Work
Goodbye
Hello
Go
Stop
as well as some extra special signs for special events such as
World book day
Eid
Easter
Check out our Dojo/facebook weekly for a new core word.
