Science Day
We held our Science Day as part of National Science week on Tuesday 19th March 2024!
The national theme this year was 'Time', and pupils from across school were involved in lots of scientific experiments, observations and experiences.
Here are some of what was happening on the big day!
Get Set Jellies!
- This activity is designed to get you making and testing jelly recipes. Jelly sets over time, but can different methods for preparing it slow that process down? Try out delicious fruits in your mixture to find out!
Make your own Sand Timer!
- The pupils built an instrument to measure time. This simple experiment uses recycled plastic bottles and sand. Once the children have built their sand timer, it can be calibrated and used to measure time.
Make your own Pendulum!
- In this activity we learnt about pendulums by making one ourselves. We experimented with ways to slow down its swing and even explored different types of swings.
Make your own Sundial!
- Before clocks were invented, people told the time using sundials. Sundials use shadows cast from a central upright portion, called a gnomon. In this activity, we made a gnomon from a selection of materials and observe how the shadow cast by it changes during the day.
Creating Shadow Puppets!
- This activity got the children thinking about how shadows are made. Shadows fall outside in different directions at different times of day, depending on the position of the sun – but we can make shadows indoors too. Children created their own shadow puppets and puppet theatres using sheets/torches/light sources etc…
Printing with Time & Light
- In this activity we used time and light to make an artwork of silhouettes created by objects placed on paper that fades in strong light. We didn't need expensive materials, just patience! The longer you leave the paper in the light, the better the effect will be. The pupils gathered a collection of flat objects with intriguing outlines. Items like leaves, flat toys, or cut-out shapes work well. Tape them to sugar paper and tape against a window and wait!
